How Marathon Runners Train Their Minds - Mindfulness Series

This mindfulness series shares stories from various individuals and their practices. Whether it's for a major sport or everyday life, these people have experienced highs and lows in their achievements. Listening to their journeys and understanding how they managed high-stress moments can maybe inspire you to start your journey.

In a world where stress often takes centre stage, finding an outlet to cope can be transformative. Rashi, is a dedicated marathon runner who has made running a part of her daily routine. Having called Dubai home for over a year, she has managed to adapt to training in the intense heat, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to her sport. Rashi’s mission is nothing short of amazing: to conquer all six world major marathons. For her, running is not merely a sport; it’s a sanctuary, a space for reflection, and a source of joy.

Running: A Stress Relief

For over a decade, running has been Rashi's lifeline, a constant in a world of change. It all began in high school, where she discovered running as a way to manage academic stress. What started as a coping mechanism evolved into an escape, offering mental clarity and a solitary space to reflect on life’s events. Every run is a journey through her mind, a way to process thoughts and emotions. It's not about achieving stillness; it's about making sense of it all.

Embracing Mindfulness and Journaling

In recent years, during Covid like many others, she experienced bouts of anxiety. To combat it, she turned to mindfulness. Her mornings now start with meditation, breathing exercises, and guided sessions from apps or podcasts. Alongside this, she keeps a gratitude journal, noting three things she is grateful for each day. In the evenings, she reflects through journaling, chronicling her activities and emotions. This practice, recommended by her therapist, has been a game-changer, helping her manage anxiety and improve communication. Discipline has always been at the heart of her journey, driven by her love for solo sports. She thrives on the personal challenge of running, where success hinges on individual effort. Her first half marathon was a revelation, igniting a desire to explore her potential further. This disciplined approach led her to set ambitious time targets and pursue full marathons. Her dedication is astonishing, waking up at 3 am to train, even in the sweltering Dubai summers.

The Fun of Marathon Training

The real magic of marathon running, according to Rashi, lies in the training. Her first marathon was a life-changing experience, transforming her love for running into a full-blown passion. Training for marathons is a fun, challenging journey where every run is a step towards the big day. It's about enjoying the process, celebrating progress, and meticulously planning each run. Rashi loves this journey, the gradual increase in mileage, and the mental preparation that comes with it.

Visualising Success

To maintain focus and motivation, she employs powerful visualisation techniques. The night before a race, she mentally prepares by visualising different segments, readying herself for the highs and lows. During the race, she dedicates each kilometre to someone significant in her life, reflecting on their influence. This practice fuels her determination, especially during challenging parts of the race. The final 500 meters are always a sprint, symbolising her relentless drive to finish strong.

Finding Community and Support

For those new to running, she recommends finding a running community or partner. Running with others makes the experience more enjoyable and motivating (especially running in crazy hot weather). Many cities offer running clubs for different paces and abilities, providing a supportive environment for beginners. For her, finding a group to train with has been impactful, ensuring she stays committed and finds joy in every run.

The Importance of Therapy and Support Networks

Rashi emphasises the importance of communication and seeking professional help for managing anxiety. Opening up to family and eventually seeking therapy has been eye-opening. Therapy offered an unbiased perspective, helping her navigate her feelings and discover effective coping mechanisms. Through therapy, she was introduced to journaling, mindfulness practices, and meditation, all of which have been crucial in managing her anxiety and maintaining mental well-being.

Her journey is proof to the power of mindfulness and the joy of running. Her dedication to personal well-being and professional success highlights the balance she achieves in life. Through running, mindfulness, and open communication, she inspires us all to chase a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. So, keep running, stay mindful, and always find time for a little self-care.
